Radiation fog and Mount Saint Helens blowing off steam on October 4 and 5, 2004



What happened?

On the morning of October 4, 2004, a dense fog blanketed an area including the entire Puget Sound of Washington State and the straits of Juan de Fuca and Georgia.
The fog was caused by a layer of warm, sinking air sitting atop a layer of cool, moist air. This temperature inversion prevented the boundary layer from becoming deeper through convective mixing. The fog dissipated in a very classical manner, dissipating from the outside towards the inside. This is attained by heating the ground (and thus the air) near the edges of the fog, mixing the moisture through a larger and larger depth. The fog dissipates and allows the ground underneath where it had been to heat up, continuing the process until all the fog has dissipated or until the sun goes down.
The other reason for showing these satellite image animations isn't weather-related, but it's cool anyhow. On October 4 at around 17:00Z, Mount Saint Helens let off some steam. The satellite animation of this is presented here.
